Alcohol (ethanol)
Alcohol (ethanol) is intoxicating. IARC classes alcoholic beverages as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1). Even small amounts are dangerous for children and for pets.
What it is
Ethanol occurs in beer, wine and spirits. It is also in vanilla extract, some sauces, desserts, liqueur chocolates and flavourings.
How IngrediScan rates it
These levels come from the fixed rules in the IngrediScan app. A low level means the rules found little or no concern for that profile. It does not mean the ingredient is safe for everyone.
| Profile | Food |
|---|---|
| Adult | High |
| Child | High |
| Infant | High |
| Dog | High |
| Cat | High |
The app flags alcohol for every profile, because of the IARC classification and because alcohol acts on the nervous system. Small bodies reach a harmful dose with a small amount. In dogs, 5.55 g of ethanol per kg body weight can be fatal.
Basis of the ratings: ban, limit or official classification.
Possible concerns: Carcinogenic, Intoxicating.
The app's rationale (exact text)
- Adult (food), Child (food), Infant (food), Dog (food), Cat (food): IARC Group 1 (alcoholic beverages and ethanol, Vols. 44/96/100E). Rated High for this classification and for acute intoxication of the nervous system.
Rules and use
In the EU, a drink with more than 1.2 % alcohol by volume must show the alcohol content on the label.
IARC classification: Group 1: carcinogenic to humans (as alcoholic beverages). IARC rates whether a substance can cause cancer in principle (hazard). It does not rate the risk at normal intake.
